Hatch Mag: The Scale of Shale

An excellent article about shale gas drilling in Pennsylvania by Chad Shmukler over at Hatch Mag. The article takes a look at the simple magnitude of these operations without getting wrapped up in the impact. Chad also observes that he was not as informed as he could have been on the scale of these things. A keen message for all of us who have interests on myriad issues. Being well informed is the first step.

  1. I'm sickened by what I see going on in PA. The gas companies bought out the politicos. Gotta keep a lid on it here in NY.

    1. Until there is a regulatory environment that can be trusted (which probably means never), I'm with you. Most of these companies are just after profits and any cost. Wouldn't it be refreshing to see an extractive industry run like Patagonia is run? I suppose that's not possible, but it should at least be an aspiration.

  2. Thanks for posting this. I remember when I got back on the rivers after a long hiatus, about three years or so ago, I saw signs lining peoples yards up in the Roscoe area against fracking and I hadn't (ashamedly enough) even heard about it until that point.

This article is valuable as it isn't necessarily accusatory and some of the comments are well spoken as well.

    1. I think Chad was being magnanimous. If there's one thing about the track record of extractive industries, it's that they're pretty good a polluting land, air and water. 100% of the mining applications say that they're not going to pollute and 100% of the mines pollute.
