Quick Sips: Donnie Beaver Edition

President Obama causes FUD for anglers
  • Someone forwarded me an email for Donnie Beaver's Homewaters operation. They now have something called an "Inaugural Membership". Apparently during these tough economic times folks are unwilling to pay tens of thousands of dollars to go trout fishing on private water. The Inaugural Program costs only $9,900. Act quickly. Democrats need not apply.
  • So in doing research to see if this was real I stumble upon Donnie Beaver's Twitter Handle: Growing in Christ, Adore my wife, kids & grandson, Conserving Trout Streams for Future Generations.  When coupled with his business model, that last part seems to imply that conservation is only for those willing to pay between $19,500 and $50,000 for membership to those said "Trout Streams".
  • The whole Homewaters Vail operation seems to be going thru a bit of a restructuring though it's difficult to tell where Homewaters ends and other Beaver operations begin.  “Members should experience very minimal negative impact, if any."
  • Apparently, according to a testimonial by Ed Karlik, you can catch "native Browns" in Pennsylvania. See, money can buy anything including the establishment of native status outside one's native range. I love money.
    From Homewaters Testimonials

UPDATE: Unconfirmed rumors are that the nineteen foot "native brown" was taken using a worm. It clearly doesn't "count".

    1. Steve - you are culvert. In fact, I'll send you a long-form certificate, just in case anybody ever doubts it.

    2. In hindsight, it occurs to me that maybe Homewaters can get you a long-form certificate as well, since they appear to have gotten one for that brown trout.

Personally, I still don't believe that trout was born here.

    3. And another thing: what is it about the brown trout there that allows them to reach sizes normally reserved for such top predators as the great white shark? Nineteen feet? I'm skeptical that what he caught was a brown trout.

    4. too bad for the Vail Club...I have never heard of snow used as an excuse for filing for bankruptcy and I'm from North Dakota...that's a pretty steep price to pay to be able to call yourself a conservationist.

    5. T.J.: I feel more Culvert every day. I don't feel Homewaters. Probably cause it's lame when compared to Culvert.

I too was skeptical about the claims of fish ranging from 17-20" and then to 19 feet. I think there's a slot limit on these waters and they trout pellet the hell out of those fish. You can take the fish under 20 inches but once they reach 20 inches you can't take them again until they're 19 feet. I recommend a twelve wt rod, 3/0 hook and a fighting chair.

Sanders: Yes, it is a steep price, but you're either a conservationist or you're not. Dig deep my friend.

      I am fond of money.

I agree. And this is why it's going to cost considerably more to read the Culvert from here on out. We've been sitting on a goldmine, and hadn't even realized it.
